After several years of work, Rainbow School's new multipurpose auditorium in Zanskar is entering its final stage. Its inauguration on August 21, 2026, will mark an important milestone in the development of the school and in APECIH's commitment to the children of Zanskar.

At nearly 3,700 metres above sea level, in one of the most remote regions of the Himalayas, constructing a building that can be used throughout the year presents a particular challenge. Zanskar's winters are long and severe, with temperatures well below freezing, requiring architecture specifically adapted to local conditions.

It is in this exceptional environment that APECIH, working with its partner TCEF, has supported the construction of Rainbow School's new multipurpose auditorium.

Architecture Designed for Zanskar's Climate

The winter of 2025-2026 provided the building with its first important test.

In February, with outside temperatures falling to around –17°C, the school reported that the new roof had performed extremely well, with no leaks or structural damage. The mud walls remained intact and the windows were also undamaged.

Even more encouraging was the building's thermal performance. Thanks to its passive-solar design and insulation, the interior remained above freezing without any active heating system, despite the very low temperatures outside.

This is particularly important at Rainbow School, where severe winter conditions significantly restrict the use of conventional school facilities.

From Construction to Finishing

Having successfully passed its first winter, the building moved into its final phase during the spring.

The April and May school reports record the start of the finishing work. Electrical installation also progressed with the help of volunteers from Switzerland, including Christoph, who contributed his technical expertise to the electrification of the new multipurpose hall.

The building is therefore progressively becoming the community space envisioned when the project began.

Much More Than an Auditorium

The new facility has been designed to meet several needs of the school. It will accommodate school gatherings, cultural events, sports activities and communal meals.

Above all, it will provide students and teachers with a large, protected indoor space suited to Zanskar's particularly demanding climate.

The value of such a facility had already become apparent even before construction was fully completed. The unfinished hall was used for the school's annual examinations and the announcement of results, providing students and parents with a safe and warm environment protected from the cold and wind.

A Milestone on August 21, 2026

On August 21, 2026, the auditorium will be officially inaugurated at Rainbow School.

The day will mark the completion of an important project, but more importantly, the beginning of the life of a building that will serve Rainbow School's students, teachers and wider community for many years to come.

For APECIH, the auditorium is a very tangible expression of our mission: to give the children of Zanskar access to a modern education while respecting their environment, culture and traditional values.

It is also a testament to what can be achieved through the combined commitment of our partners, volunteers and donors.

August 21 will therefore be, above all, an opportunity to celebrate a new chapter in the story of Rainbow School.
